DESIGNER SPOTLIGHTS
Wyees Williams was born & raised on the South Side of Chicago and has always been involved with the community and the fashion world.
Wyees graduated from University of Missouri in 2016, and then became the Creative Director for Amato while helping launch well-renowned streetwear company, TRAPANESE. However, as the brand grew, Wyees began to feel more and more distant for his hometown as he grappled with questions of who he wanted to become as a designer and a person.
This internal debate resolved itself in 2017 when Wyees moved back to Chicago and reconnected with his childhood friend and Rapunzl Co-Founder, Myles Gage, with a vision: to use his creative design expertise and fashion experience to create a social-impact streetwear collection for Rapunzl’s Scholarship Fund to help with their mission to promote financial fluency.
“I just grew tired of hearing Southside this or Southside that. I was fed up with the media producing such an acutely negative perception and perpetuating so many negative stereotypes because they’re not only false representations, but they also trivialize the accomplishments & contributions of an amazingly vibrant community that I grew up in.
That negativity and us-them mentality leaves students in despair and elimates hope for a brighter future. Without hope, good people fall victim to bad environments rather than rising above their circumstance. They fall on financial hardship because they're scared to talk about money. We need to teach kids to be financially fluent and have those conversations, cause I didn't know any of that.
That’s why, when I heard about Rapunzl, I finally saw a pathway to empower students and instill a mindset that ‘yes, one day you will be successful and you will be an investor. The high returns of Wall Street aren’t trapped in an inaccessible ivory tower, and if you start engaging with this material and learning now, you’ll be able to reach them too.’”
